The power has been out for hours, the internet barely works, yet the laptop keeps running thanks to a car battery wired up with improvised cables next to the desk.
At first glance the scene feels almost like an internet meme, but it captures a real contradiction of our time: at the very moment major powers are pouring billions into data centers, chips, and AI infrastructure, programmers, designers, and engineers in Syria are trying to enter this age with tools that barely keep them going.
The world today is not just living through a new tech wave — it is living through a full economic shift.
AI is no longer a toy or a technical experiment; it is becoming a new layer running through almost everything: media, education, commerce, programming, design, marketing, industry, even decision-making itself.
Which is why governments now treat AI as strategic infrastructure, on par with electricity, the internet, and oil.
But the question that forces itself here is: where does Syria stand inside this fast-moving global shift?
The answer can seem pessimistic at first.
Digital infrastructure is still weak, electricity is not always stable, the internet is far slower than the world it tries to keep up with, and access to some modern technology is harder than in other countries. In a world that depends more and more on cloud computing, constant connectivity, and heavy compute, that gap is real.
And yet, the picture is not entirely dark.
Because Syria, despite everything, has produced in recent years a remarkable number of programmers, designers, and digital workers who managed to enter the global market from conditions that often look impossible. Some worked from tiny rooms, some started with a modest device and a weak connection, some really did rely on improvised solutions just to keep going.
Still, many of them ended up working with companies abroad, building their own projects, or entering the global digital economy in one way or another.
And here a point emerges that may change the whole way we look at this.
For the first time in decades, global competition may not be tied only to the size of factories, the number of machines, or even heavy capital alone.
In the old economy, the countries that owned the factories, the energy, the heavy infrastructure always held the advantage. In the digital economy, and especially in the AI era, other elements are becoming more decisive: speed of learning, capacity to adapt, and the ability to understand new tools and use them well.
This is precisely a point that cannot be ignored in the Syrian case.
Because an entire generation of Syrians has learned, over the past years, how to work under pressure, how to find solutions in unstable conditions, and how to adapt fast. It was never really a choice — but it has become a genuine skill.
And so the Syrian scene feels strange at times: on one side a tired infrastructure that does not fully match the age, and on the other side a human reservoir capable of learning, working, and evolving at remarkable speed. As if the problem were not the absence of minds, but the environment those minds are trying to work inside.
AI, however “digital” it may seem, ultimately depends on very physical things: stable electricity, decent internet, suitable hardware, and markets that actually understand the value of technology.
Any serious conversation about the future of AI in Syria cannot stop at tools and software. It has to include the entire digital infrastructure — because the countries that will truly benefit from this shift are not only the ones with talent, but the ones able to keep that talent inside an environment that can grow.
And yet this era may carry an opportunity slightly different from earlier ones.
Unlike many traditional industries, AI has sharply lowered the cost of entering the global market. Today a single person, with a mid-range machine and a reasonable connection, can produce things that once required entire companies and large budgets. That opens an important door for environments that have more talent than means.
Perhaps for that exact reason, Syria today stands before a strange paradox: not fully ready for this age, yet not entirely outside it. And in a world moving this fast, the ability to learn can sometimes outrun the ability to build.
So maybe the real question is no longer: can Syrians use AI? But: if the infrastructure ever arrives… how far could this generation truly compete with the world?
