About the film

The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is not merely a historic mosque, but one of the greatest witnesses to Islamic civilization across more than thirteen centuries. This magnificent monument has witnessed the rise and fall of states, wars, fires, invasions, and natural disasters. Despite all of this, it has remained a symbol of grandeur, beauty, and architectural creativity. In this video, we explore the complete story of the Umayyad Mosque, from the moments when it nearly lost a large part of its decorations to its survival from a decision that would have changed its history forever.

You will learn about the position of the just caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz when he saw the gold, decorations, and mosaics inside the mosque. He believed that they contradicted the simplicity of Islam and considered removing all the valuable features and returning them to the Muslim treasury. This was followed by an important historical conversation with Khalid ibn Abdullah Al-Qasri, who presented strong arguments proving that these decorations had not been funded by the treasury, but were gifts and donations from Muslims in different regions out of their love for this great mosque. This led the caliph to reconsider his decision and uphold justice and truth.

We also examine one of the most remarkable accounts concerning a delegation of Byzantine Romans who arrived in Damascus and entered the Umayyad Mosque for the first time. They were astonished by the grandeur of the building and the beauty of its mosaics and decorations. The head of the delegation was so overwhelmed that he uttered words that became among the most famous historical testimonies describing the mosque. He realized that the Muslims could not have built such a monument unless they possessed a powerful civilization and an enduring state, which had a significant effect on how Muslims viewed the importance of this unique building.

The video also discusses the objections raised regarding the construction of the Umayyad Mosque and the historical controversy surrounding the churches that had existed on its site. It explains how Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz dealt with the matter with the utmost justice and fairness by reviewing documents, the Umari covenant, and the historical rights involved. The matter ultimately ended with the preservation of the mosque after the legal and historical facts concerning the site became clear.

Because history is never free from hardship, the Umayyad Mosque was exposed to a long series of fires and disasters that nearly destroyed it more than once. Large parts of it burned during the Seljuk era, and it later suffered extensive destruction during Timur’s invasion of Damascus, when fire consumed its roof, decorations, and arcades. Other fires during the Mamluk era caused important parts of the mosque to collapse. Yet each time, Muslims rebuilt it so that it returned stronger and more beautiful, remaining a symbol of Damascus’s resilience throughout the ages.

The video also highlights the great fire of 1893, considered one of the most dangerous disasters in the history of the Umayyad Mosque. A large part of the mosque was reduced to ruins, and many of its historical features and original decorations were lost. However, the Ottoman state, under Sultan Abdul Hamid II, launched a major project to reconstruct and rebuild the mosque, allowing this architectural masterpiece to remain standing until the present day.

Throughout this video, you will see documented historical information about Umayyad architecture, the famous mosaics that decorated the mosque’s walls, the reasons behind their global reputation, and the most important restoration projects that preserved this unique civilizational heritage. You will also discover stories of the caliphs, scholars, and kings who passed through this blessed place, along with the most significant events it witnessed over more than thirteen hundred years.
