The Umayyad Mosque Through the Ages (Part Three)

In this part of the series, we arrive at one of the most fascinating moments in the history of the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus. We explore the great transformation that changed the features of the place forever, and we recount how Caliph Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik made his historic decision to begin removing the additions that had been built inside the ancient temple, preparing the way for the construction of a mosque that would later become one of the greatest architectural achievements of Islamic civilization.

We learn about the historical accounts that spoke of the priests and bishops warning the caliph against demolishing the church, after generations had passed down the belief that whoever did so would be struck by madness. We then see how Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik’s response came decisively, as he declared his full readiness to bear the responsibility. The scene continues with him personally climbing to the top of the structure to strike the first blow in the demolition process, amid the takbirs of the Muslims, in a moment that became one of the most famous scenes in the history of Damascus.
