The Secret of the Umayyad Mosque Mosaics | Chapter 4

The evidence does not stop at the papyri, but extends to the Syriac inscriptions discovered in the Kamid al-Loz area in the Lebanese Beqaa, which document the participation of craftsmen who came from northern Iraq in extracting and carving stones to be used in building the Umayyad Mosque. This completes before us the image of one of the greatest construction workshops in Islamic history, one that brought together expertise from different regions of the Umayyad state to build a mosque that has remained a symbol of Islamic architecture until today.
