Homs… A City Across the Ages

9 images

From the Late Eighteenth Century Homs stands at the heart of Syria as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in history; a city whose land has witnessed countless civilizations, armies, and caravans, yet despite every transformation, has preserved its quiet spirit and distinctive character.

History knew it since ancient times as “Emesa.” It was an important center in ancient Syrian civilization, then during the Roman and Byzantine periods, before later becoming one of the prominent cities of the Levant in the Islamic eras. Thanks to its central location between Damascus, Aleppo, the coast, and the desert, Homs played an important role for many long centuries as a commercial, military, and cultural station.

In the late eighteenth century, the city lived around its old markets, stone neighborhoods, ancient mosques, and churches, where daily life blended with the commercial and agricultural movement coming from the surrounding countryside and desert. The Orontes River, despite its quiet flow, was part of the memory of the place and its human details.

Old photographs and drawings reveal the features of Homs during that period: narrow alleyways, covered markets, khans, Arab houses with inner courtyards, and the faces that shaped the city’s life with silence and simplicity.

Among the most prominent historical landmarks of Homs is the Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque, with its famous minarets and distinctive architectural style, alongside the Church of Saint Mary of the Holy Belt, considered one of the oldest churches in the world, in addition to the city’s old markets, gates, and neighborhoods that remained witnesses to long centuries of life.

This album is not merely a visual archive, but a window into Homs as it once was: a city carrying the memory of its people in its stones, and the stories of an entire era in the faces of its inhabitants.

Homs…As time saw it, and as it remained.
